As we move into the Spring, the dot-art Showroom is playing host to a series of large scale, geometric paintings exploring colour and line and inspired by the architecture of Liverpool. A working artist for over forty years, Merseyside based John Petch was recently long-listed for the John Moores Painting Prize.

 

Always fascinated by shape, colour and line, John began painting in the mid-1960s. He trained to teach art in Liverpool and worked in a number of Merseyside schools until retiring three years ago. His painting over the years has moved from Op Art to Geometrical Abstraction. Over the past few years the work has continued to be bold in colour and shape but his newest series looks particularly towards the urban environment, as he discusses here:

 

“My recent work investigates the relationship between line and space in the city. How shape and line in buildings interact, how old and new structures sit together, with spaces of sky, how light reflects and interacts with the viewer’s perspective and position to capture tonal changes. An ever changing vibrant urban landscape full of energy and mood.”

“My work connects visual art, architecture and mathematical relationship in a single form. This fusion challenges the viewer from what is understood and experienced into abstract form.”
